Welcome to Grade 5/6!
My name is Guy Becker and it is my pleasure to be joining the staff at Fulham school this year. This is my second year of teaching and I am thrilled to be teaching grade 5/6! If you would like to know more about me and my background, please visit the biography tab.
To begin the year, I would like to introduce you to a few things that I use in my classroom to both stay connected with parents and encourage student success.
This year, I invite you to join me on Remind. Remind is a free update and messaging service that allows me to send important reminders about upcoming assignments or classroom events. It also also allows you to talk directly to me, just like sending an email or text! Students will be sent home with instructions on how to join Remind, but if you need an extra copy, it can be found under the homework tab.
This year, I will be using the Class Dojo app in order to give students reward points which can be exchanged for classroom rewards. If you wish, you can join Class Dojo track your child's reward points. Instructions on how to follow your child on Class Dojo will be sent home with your child. If you require an extra copy, feel free to contact me.
Classroom Achievement Awards
Each Friday, in addition to Class Dojo rewards, I will be picking deserving students to receive a classroom achievement award for their outstanding work, dedication, improvement, and/or kindness. These awards are simply meant to encourage students to try their best and highlight student achievements and qualities. Students SHOULD NOT be discouraged if they do not receive an award frequently. My goal is to provide students with MANY positive rewards to encourage them to be the best that they can be, and the weekly classroom achievement awards are just one of the ways I hope to do this.

Orange Shirt Day
Students will be made aware that "busy work" will not be assigned to be done at home. Students should be able to complete their daily work in the time given in class. However, if a student does not use their time in class effectively, I may ask for the assignment to be completed at home.
For both grade 5 and 6, I will ask for some short assignments to be completed in order to help with the growth of reading and writing. These assignments should not take more than 20 minutes every night and should allow for students to study for tests and quizzes. I understand that our students and families lead busy lives and I do not intend to overwhelm them with homework.
Thursday spelling tests
Grade 5 and 6 students will be assigned weekly spelling words beginning in the second week of September. These spelling words will be given based on the student's assessed spelling level. Spelling tests will be given every Thursday.
Book talk assignments
In order to encourage grade 5 and 6 students to spend time time reading at home, I assign 5 mandatory book talk assignments to be completed throughout the year. Students may complete book talks as often as they please, with extra book talks being rewarded with Class Dojo points. However, the due dates for the each of the 5 book talks is listed below.
